Why did you start a business in Moyne Shire?

After five years of running Home Grown in Kyneton — including navigating the challenges of the pandemic — our family came to Port Fairy for a two-week holiday in February and fell in love with the town. A sea change felt right for our family.

Starting another café wasn’t originally the plan, but when we saw the Bank Street property for lease, we couldn’t resist opening in a second location.

Home Grown offers healthy, fresh all-day breakfast and lunch, kids’ meals, and flexibility for dietary requirements. Our approach is grounded in sustainability and doing our bit for the planet. In Kyneton, my partner Rob transitioned from teaching to growing produce on our property for the café, and that ‘home grown’ philosophy continues here. In Port Fairy, we’ve focused on connecting with local suppliers, sourcing local organic coffee and tea, produce from Volcano Produce and Merri Banks, and keeping the menu seasonal — with a new spring menu on the way.

What has surprised you about running a business in Moyne Shire?

The warmth and generosity of the community has been incredible. Since opening, we’ve felt strong support from locals, neighbouring businesses, and producers. There’s a genuine commitment to backing local operators, which makes a real difference when establishing yourself in a new town.

We’ve also appreciated the practical support available through Council and Commerce Moyne initiatives, particularly the Work and Play program. The program connects hospitality businesses with backpackers seeking summer work and helps subsidise accommodation, making it easier to secure seasonal staff during peak periods. For a regional hospitality business, that kind of structured workforce support is invaluable.

What advice do you have for new businesses starting up in Moyne?

Find the right staff — people who align with your business values — and treat them like family. Build strong relationships with local producers and other businesses, and immerse yourself in the community.

Staying true to your values and your vision, while making use of the support available locally, is what builds loyalty, resilience, and longevity in Moyne Shire.
